barium springs

Since 1891, Barium Springs has been committed to a safe and nurturing family life for every child. Barium Springs serves North Carolina's children and families by providing a caring place to live for abused or neglected children, early childhood development for low income families, counseling services and foster family programs. They also offer behavior treatment in a school setting for troubled teens as well as early intervention services for children still living in the community.

Excerpts taken from First Presbyterian Church website: Our mission in Bolivia today is all about children. But our Bolivian mission actually began in 1996, when representatives from FPC first visited Kwang–Ju, Korea. It has grown from a Korean–exchange program into an active, hands–on world mission proclaiming the Word of Christ by offering educational opportunities and medical care to over 200 children in Santa Cruz, Bolivia.

Today, we support a school in Santa Cruz, the Eden School. Everyone who has visited this school has enjoyed the experience after having a chance to learn about people of faith from another culture and to become acquainted with a genuinely enthusiastic and loving community of Christians. More than 20 people, mostly members of this congregation, have spent a week with kids from the Eden School, and we extend an invitation to all members of our church who would like to join in this hands–on ministry.

Even if you cannot travel to Bolivia, you can participate in this active, long–term mission by supporting a student at the Eden School. Full support for a school year is only $215.

Per Dr. Bill Miller:

This is "a wonderful bargain since it supports a single child’s education for an entire year.  That one child is connected to 2 parents, several brothers and sisters and grandparents who often live in the same house.  Therefore, helping one child helps 7-9 people total.  Also, 100% of the money goes to the child’s education.  Nothing is wasted and nothing goes astray.  It is a very efficient use of funds.

Also, the scholarship gets the child to the Eden school which means he/she can benefit from the medical/dental/vision mission that we have sent down for the past 4 years.  The dentists say they see a wonderful change in the students teeth – we give them fluoride treatment, teach them how to brush – we also pull really bad teeth and fill cavities.  Just getting into the school opens this medical opportunity to the children and their families."

inter-faith food shuttle

In 1989, two women, Maxine Solomon and Jill Staton Bullard, witnessed breakfast sandwiches being thrown away in a fast food restaurant because it was time to put out lunch items. From that inauspicious beginning, the Food Shuttle has grown to be a powerful hunger relief organization providing food for thousands every day. Featured in publications as diverse as Southern Living, Franklin Covey's PRIORITIES Magazine, and Prentice Hall's 2001 9th grade civics textbook, the Food Shuttle is nationally recognized. The Inter-Faith Food Shuttle has won the Excellence in Food Rescue Award three times. It is also a member of the President's Circle of America's Second Harvest. More important than any national recognition, the Food Shuttle enjoys broad community support with volunteers donating over 38,000 hours each year and over 220 food donors contributing over 5 million pounds of food annually.

The Inter-Faith Food Shuttle recovers good food that would otherwise go to waste and gets it to hungry people.  By these efforts we can help people from being hungry today.  The generosity and support of the community has allowed them to continue their efforts through the years.  At Inter-Faith Food Shuttle there are many ways that you can help drive hunger from the Triangle.

  • Volunteer--They are always in need of able hands, strong backs, and good hearts.
  • Drive a Route--Volunteer drivers and assistants follow an established route, recovering food from donor sites and delivering it to designated recipient agencies.  A four-hour per week commitment is required.
  • Help in the Warehouse--Volunteers are needed to work in the warehouse sorting and repackaging incoming food to redistribution and aiding in general warehouse maintenance.
  • Help Together with your Friends--Groups volunteering at the Food Shuttle use the existing food stocks to pack grocery bags and then deliver them to senior citizens throughout our community.
  • Help in the Office--Office volunteers help in creating and maintaining databases, filing papers, answering phones, or doing data entry.
  • Donate Lowe’s Foods Greenpoints--Supporters of the Food Shuttle can donate their personal Lowe’s Foods Rewards S & H greenpoints to support the Shuttle.  You only need to contact the toll-free number located on the back of your Lowes Rewards card to donate points or the Lowe’s Food Customer Care Center at 1-888-537-8646.  When you call to donate your Greenpoints, please have the Food Shuttle number ready: 420227517103.
  • Donate Money--With the many generous gifts from many wonderful donors, the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle is able to continue to drive hunger from our community.   To help change peoples' lives with a monetary donation, please make your check payable to EMPC and mark “Food Shuttle” in the memo section.

One Great HourSince 1949, Presbyterians have joined with millions of other Christians through One Great Hour of Sharing to share God’s love with people experiencing need. Our gifts support ministries of disaster response, refugee assistance and resettlement, and community development that help people find safe refuge, start new lives, and work together to strengthen their families and communities.

Recognizing that the hope we have in Christ is lived out in our hope for one another, we respond with gifts that help our sisters and brothers around the world find the hope for a brighter future.

On the fourth Sunday of every month, each member of the Congregation is encouraged to contribute a few cents for every meal they have had that month. This simple act is an expression of thanks for what we have received. It is also a commitment to share with others in response to Jesus' command "You give them something to eat." When members bring their offerings to church on the appointed Sunday all of those coins "make a joyful noise unto the Lord" as they are received and dedicated. The children of the church collect the money during the Children's Worship Time at the Sunday service.

operation christmas childOperation Christmas Child has been a vital mission ministry of EMPC for years.  Although it is difficult to get in the mind set of Christmas so early in the fall, it is not too soon to start thinking about preparing your special shoe box gift.  Operation Christmas Child brings joy and hope to children in desperate situations worldwide through gift-filled shoe boxes.  A shoe box filled with small toys and other gifts can open hurting hearts to God’s love.

jarsboxesFor our White Christmas mission, we collect canned goods and non-perishable foods to distribute to needy families in our community. Members of the congregation as well as the director of the Child Development Center nominate families who are in need. After all the items are collected, we put together boxes and drive them to families.

If you would like to participate or know of a family in need, please contact someone on the Outreach Committee.
